Early Childhood

REGIONAL AND STATEWIDE RESOURCES TO LOCATE AND ACCESS EARLY CHILDHOOD CARE FACILITIES AND EDUCATION PROGRAMS:

Bright Futures Information System – Provides a database of child-care providers throughout Vermont, both licensed centers and registered homes, searchable by town. This site also contains information on becoming a child-care provider. For information, contact: www.brightfutures.dcf.state.vt.us.

Children’s Integrated Services (CIS) – If you are the parent of a child age 6 or younger and you have questions or concerns about a suspected developmental delay or condition, CIS can help develop an action plan for your child and family, provide resources and services or make referrals and help you through any transitions to other community services. CIS also assists pregnant and postpartum women with questions or concerns about a condition or risk situation that impacts the mother’s or the baby’s health or safety and families that have questions or concerns about providing a stable, healthy environment for their children.  https://dcf.vermont.gov/services/cis.

Kingdom Childcare Connection – Child-care support services to support and assist families with their child-care needs in a variety of methods – child-care subsidy eligibility, child-care referral services, community outreach and the child-care resource development program. Umbrella is the regional child-care resource and referral agency. A book-lending library for parents and providers is also available. Northeast Kingdom Community Action Parent Child Center – NEKCA operates 2 Parent Child Centers (or PCCs) in the Northeast Kingdom. One is located in St. Johnsbury and the other is in Newport, but both reach out with services across our region to support families. Our Parent Child Centers are part of a statewide network of support that offers families 8 Core Services which are listed below. Vermont Department of Education – The Dept. of Education, individually and in collaboration with a number of other organizations, supports early education initiatives in many ways. Vermont school districts have the option of providing publicly funded prekindergarten (preK) education for 3- to 5-year-olds by establishing partnerships with qualified early care and education programs, by operating a preK program directly or by doing both. In addition to publicly funded prekindergarten education, there are an assortment of other programs including Early Education Initiative, Essential Early Education, Even Start Family Literacy and Title I Preschool/Migrant Preschool Services. Elementary & Secondary Education

PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEMS
Our public school systems include complete facilities from pre-kindergarten through the 12th grade, Head Start and summer school programs.  Two of our local high schools, St. Johnsbury Academy and Lyndon Institute, are operated semi-public/private, meaning they are private secondary schools with tuition provided by the town to its residents. Students come from all over for these co-educational schools, grades 9-12.

Good Shepherd Catholic School – A Diocesan, Catholic School, grades Pre K-8, using a standards-based curriculum with daily instruction in religion and weekly instruction in French, Physical Education, Art, Music and Library. St. Johnsbury Academy – A comprehensive independent secondary school serving a wide range of students, grades 9-12. The Academy serves as the area technical school. Since the Academy serves both as a day and boarding school, it provides its students with culturally rich experience academically, culturally and athletically. Colleges/Higher Education

The Northeast Kingdom has many local colleges and other programs for furthering higher education and training. Our private and state colleges offer diversified educational and degree programs.

Vermont Adult Technical Education – Comprised of St. Johnsbury Academy and Lyndon Institute, www.vtate.org, provides a central location for all information relating to adult technical education in the region, offering on-site and on-line classes along with off-site classes. Community College of Vermont (CCV) – An accessible, affordable and student-centered college, serving 9,000 students each year. A Vermont State College, CCV offers associate degree and certificate programs, as well as a wide selection of day, evening and online courses. Students may enroll part or full time in December, March and July for the upcoming semester. Financial Aid is available.
