2017 Road Pitch – St Johnsbury @ Catamount Arts Center

Date: Friday, August 4, 2017
Time: 10:00 am - 11:30 am

Road Pitch is a statewide event and St. Johnsbury is one of ten host locations. A local committee was formed in April to encourage entrepreneurs to step forward and participate. Free business training with individual coaching was offered. For an emerging business or an existing business looking to grow, the training component provided a valuable opportunity to reach a business milestone. Polishing and refining a 5-7 minute presentation for Road Pitch is giving local entrepreneurs access to professional advice, networking, cash prizes and the possibility of capital investment.

Road Pitch was created in 2014 by Cairn Cross, co-founder of Fresh Tracks Capital. The annual event gathers a group of motorcyclists with expertise in investing, business consulting, and entrepreneurship for a week-long ride around Vermont to support existing small businesses and promising start-ups. There will be a final event in October at Champlain College for the winners from each of the ten host towns to compete for a grand prize and extensive mentoring from the Road Pitch Riders.

On August 4th @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am, four local entrepreneurs will “pitch” their creative ideas for an innovative product or unique business concept to an audience of business experts who will be riding into St. Johnsbury for Road Pitch 2017. The public is invited to observe the competition at Catamount Arts Center at 10:00 am. The four finalists seeking potential investors for their creative work are:
1.Jason Shafer, Northwind Weather Technologies
2.Donna & Roger Pion, Biochar Waste Management
3.Andrea Kane, Shamdanna, Eco Bandana
4.Regan Pride, The Freezer Butler.

Time: 9:00 am - 4:00 pm

Craft Distilling as a Profession: The Vermont Experience.  Vermont is one of the leaders in the nationwide boom in microdistilling. This training brings students into direct contact with a variety of processes involved in building, operating, and working in a distillery and the distilling industry. Lectures, labs, visits from experts, demonstrations, and hands-on experience at distilleries introduce distilling and still design, fermentation, distillery economics, and basic business and marketing skills. An emphasis is placed on production of high-quality spirits from local ingredients and how to bring these successfully to market. The training also covers such details as licensing, environmental concerns, permits, and reports for the TTB, safety, and quality control. Led by Duncan Holaday, a pioneer in micro-distilling, he is the owner and operator of Dunc’s Mill and consults on distillery and still design. Visiting lecturers and distillery visits expose participants to a variety of products, business models and scales, and construction types for distilleries. Each partcipant will complete and present a project that reflects his or her particular interests and draws from topics covered in the training.

Opportunities for direct observation and hands-on work during the training will be at Dunc’s Mill in St. Johnsbury, Shelburne Orchards Distillery in Shelburne, and Hooker Mountain Farm in Cabot, Wild Hart Distillery located in Shelburne, and Mad River Distillery located in Waitsfield. The class will also tour other distilleries in Vermont. Farmers markets have served as a key venue for producers to expand sales of their Vermont made spirits. During the training visits will be made to two different markets to experience this one-on-one marketing first hand.

Free Salary Negotiation Workshop presented by the Vermont Commission on Women

Date: Saturday, May 26, 2018
Time: 10:00 am - 11:30 am

VCW is sponsoring this free workshop, facilitated by Lindsey Lathrop, Career Coach at FromWithin Coaching. This event is aimed at women in the workforce or just launching careers. All are welcome.

Choosing not to negotiate is leaving some serious money on the table. Over 50% of women say they are apprehensive about negotiating and only 30% of women consistently negotiate salaries. For many of us, even the thought of negotiating makes us nervous. How much do I ask for? When is the best time to do it? What if I don't feel like I deserve more? Let's answer these questions and more! This workshop is designed to teach you how to negotiate with confidence. Avoid the traps many of us fall into and get in plenty of time for practice.
